Speech Intelligibility

Efficient, accurate, reliable, and valid measurements of speech intelligibility are critical components for determining the severity of functional communication in everyday environments. Improvement of speech intelligibility is a primary aim in the remediation of speech disorders in children.  Although an established consensus exists amongst clinical speech pathologists supporting the importance of evaluating speech intelligibility, little agreement exists on how to measure it. Most clinicians rely on subjective impressions based on what they hear to decide about the level of intelligibility. The measurement of speech intelligibility has received considerable attention in the adult population, however practical methods for evaluating and quantifying intelligibility in the pediatric population remain limited. In our lab, we are investigating ways of assessing speech intelligibility through the development of easy intelligibility rating tools and by using automated acoustic analysis approaches.
