RISE Framework

Reimagining Inclusive Speech-Language Evaluation (RISE)

What is the RISE Framework

The RISE Framework is a multidisciplinary research and innovation effort focused on transforming how we screen, assess, and support speech and language development in young children.

Why RISE?

Traditional screening tools often:

  • Reflect narrow cultural or linguistic norms

  • Over identify or under identify children based on dialect, language background, or race

  • Require intensive training and time from educators and clinicians

The RISE Framework was launched to address these gaps, not with minor adjustments, but with a reimagined approach built from the ground up, informed by real-world classrooms, families, and data.

Our Approach

We center our work around four core commitments:

Inclusion

We develop measurement models that embrace dialectal variation, multilingualism, and diverse modes of expression, rather than overlook or penalize them.

Fairness

We prioritize fairness in both design and performance, evaluating tools across racial, linguistic, and socioeconomic subgroups.

Innovation

We use cutting-edge technologies, including AI, to improve accuracy and reduce the burden on educators and clinicians.

Ecological Validity

We build with,  not just for, communities, drawing on caregiver and teacher insight to ensure real-world relevance.
